CONTENT

High voltage technology is very important in a large number of electrical or industrial applications. Among others, it has a key role in the transmission and distribution of electricity and in the design of equipment used in electrical power systems. High voltage engineering involves different areas, from fundamental theory of high electric field control and dielectric breakdown to laboratory techniques for generation and measurement of high voltage or component testing.

Various topics will be covered such as:

  • Electric field theory; electric field stress control
  • Generation of high voltage (dc, ac, impulses)
  • Introduction to high voltage measurement techniques. Measurement of high voltage with sphere gaps, electrostatic voltmeters, peak value measurements, high voltage measurements using transformation ratios. Application of resistive, capacitive or mixed high voltage dividers for measuring dc, ac or impulse high voltages.
  • Properties of electrical insulating materials. Solid, liquid and gases as insulators. Electrical breakdown in solid insulators. Electrical discharges in gases. Townsend's theory of ionisation growth, Paschen's law. Vacuum breakdown.
  • Applications of high voltage insulation in HV Cables, Overhead Line Insulators, Transformers, Circuit Breakers and Generators.
  • Atmospheric Electricity. Lightning surges, switching surges and power frequency overvoltages. Surge propagation. Surges and Insulation Co-ordination.
